On 16 & 17 September, GRANULAR participated in the 18th workshop of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). The event focused on ‘Social capital and rural development trends in the knowledge and risk society’. The event addressed pressing issues facing rural areas, including depopulation, regional deprivation and the growing impact of climate change on rural communities in today’s so-called ‘post-urban world’.
The workshop brought together researchers from to examine how social capital fosters regional innovation and resilience, providing rural communities with the tools to adapt to shocks such as economic downturns and resource degradation.
GRANULAR Participation in the event
Representing the GRANULAR project, Martin Hofer and Ian McCallum from IIASA, presented research on how web-based data can be harnessed to analyse tourism patterns in rural areas. Their work highlighted how understanding tourism flows can help support rural areas in managing resources and driving local economic resilience.
